Living With ME/CFS

A Journey to Health

Gummy Recipe for Leaky Gut Syndrome

Often people with ME/CFS have a disrupte gut flora in addition to problems with gut motility and mucosal barrier leakage. This causes a vicious cycle of inflammation and malnutrition which must be stopped for any healing to take place. In their book, Leaky Gut, Leaky Cells, Leaky Brain, Dr. Jess Armine and Elizma Lambert explain this problem and give a recipe for a type of nutritious salve that supports the healing of the gut lining and helps to repopulate the microbiome. It’s available as an eBook or in paperback. I find their remedy very tasty and easy to take, however my young adult daughters do not like the texture.

(Not pictured – olive oil & zinc carnosine capsules. And no longer using Sialex – replacing it with slippery elm capsules.)

So I’ve come up with a gummy version with some added ingredients such as sunflower lecithin, non-GMO oatmilk, my homemade vanilla syrup and non-GMO organic gelatin. You can substitute sweeteners, flavorings and the oatmilk with what you prefer for your family, but the main healing ingredients are the oils, probiotics and supplement capsules. The consistency is a mix between gummy bear chewiness and jello and they must be refrigerated and then frozen after 7 days.

Equipment

  • two small pots
  • candy thermometer
  • silicone molds

Ingredients

Oatmilk & Gelatin Mixture

  • 2 cups non-GMO oatmilk (or liquid of choice)
  • 10 tbsp unflavored gelatin (I use Bulletproof Collagelatin)
  • 3 tbsp raw honey
  • 1 tbsp vanilla syrup (I make it with 1 C water, 1 C sugar, 2t vanilla extract boiled together.)

Oils & Supplement Mixture

  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • 1 tsp sunflower lecithin
  • 6 tsp SunButyrate (by Pure Encapsulations) or MCT/Subutyrate (by Douglas Labs) or 4 capsules of serum derived bovine immunoglobulins SBI Product names: Mega IGG 2000 (Microbiomne Labs), SBI Protect, or google "dairy free bovine immunoglobulins"
  • 5 capsules probiotics (low histamine) (I use Seeking Health's ProBiota Sensitive)
  • 4 capsules slippery elm
  • 4 capsules zinc carnosine (I use Seeking Health's brand)

Instructions

  • Grease the silicone molds with a small amount of coconut oil, place on a firm cookie sheet or similar support tray (they get flimsy and spill otherwise) and set aside
  • In a small pot, mix oatmilk (or chosen liquid) with gelatin and let sit for 5 minutes
  • Heat to just below boiling and remove from heat
  • Mix in honey and vanilla syrup and put thermometer into mixture
  • In a separate small pot gently warm the coconut oil on the lowest setting until it's completely liquid. Do not get this hot to the touch since the probiotics need the temperature to be below 100 degrees F to remain viable.
  • Add olive oil, SunButyrate, sunflower lecithin, slippery elm, probiotic and zinc carnosine capsules and blend well with spoon
  • When oatmilk/gelatin mixture is 100 degrees F or below, add the oil/probiotic mixture to it stirring until blended well
  • Pour or use a large dropper to fill the molds with the mixture
  • Refrigerate for approximately 2 hours or until the sides of the bears pull away easily from the molds.
  • Place in an opened container or on a large dish to continue to dry out in the refrigerator for another 24 hours
  • Keep in a closed container or jar for up to seven days in the refrigerator and then freeze thereafter.
  • They are delicious as is or they can be rolled in pumpkin spice or cinnamon sugar for extra flavor before eating. HEAL & ENJOY!!!

Notes

One serving is approximately 1.5 tablespoons or 3-4 average sized gummy bears.
